On June 29th, 2010, the companies Transelectrica, Siemens and Energomontaj inaugurated the completion of the retrofitting works at the 400/110/20 kV substation Gura Ialomitei. The Consortium consisting of Siemens Austria and Energomontaj was the general contractor of this project, whose leader was Siemens Austria. The project execution term was 25 months, starting from 2007 and ending in June 12th, 2010. The total amount of the retrofitting work was Euro 28,599,488 and the financing was assured from Transelectrica’s own sources.
The substation retrofitting was accomplished by a turn key contract (equipment design, supply and erection). The retrofitting works at the 400/110/20 kV substation Gura Ialomitei situated in Mihail Kogalniceanu village towards Slobozia town, consisted of replacing the primary and secondary systems (control and protection) with state-of-the-art and highly efficient ones.
The retrofitted substation Gura Ialomitei is the second transmission substation of Transelectrica designed and constructed with GIS technology (Gas Insulated Switchgear- capsulated substation with SF6 gas insulation) with modern control and protection equipment produced by Siemens. The systems are compact and emission-free, they cannot be impacted by pollution and have low maintenance costs, with reliable operation and compliant with the west European standards. The substation retrofitting was executed with the old substation under operation, without outages, on the existing location and with no extra land requirement. All this reasons determined the selection of the GIS solution achieved with highly efficient primary switchgears, with a digital protection and control system which may be locally and remotely controlled, with FO and HF (high frequency transmission) telecommunication and teleprotection systems.
„The substation that has been retrofitted with capsulated equipment, with SF6 gas insulation and a new control and protection system, is a state-of-the–art substation compliant with required interconnected operation of the Romanian Power System (RPS) with the west European one. Retrofitting the 400/110/20 kv substation Gura Ialomitei with new and highly efficient systems will increase the reliable operation of the energy node, assuring the power transit between the Nuclear Power Plant of Cernavoda and the Muntenia and Moldova regions, cutting down the maintenance and operation costs, power delivery generated in the Lacul Sarat thermo-power plant and supply of the consumers in the area by the substations of 110 and 20 kV”, stated Mr. Adrian Baicusi, Director General of Transelectrica, on this opportunity.
