On May 3rd, 2012 Co. Transelectrica - Transmission and System Operator of Romania commissioned its 80th transmission substation, namely the 400/110 kV Rahman, Tulcea County, with the main goal to discharge the renewable energy from wind power plants.
The 400/110 kV substation Rahman will connect 700 MW to the Electricity Transmission Grid, of which 200 MW through wind farms Alpha Wind + CAS Regenerabile (held by Co. Verbund, Austria?s largest electricity generator and transporter) as well as Beta Wind and Land Power. The work started in December 2010 and was executed by ABB Romania. The first 250 MWA transformer will be energised in the first stage in order to connect Verbund?s wind farms. Project financing came from the investors.
Our country has got the greatest wind potential in south-eastern Europe, this being the reason why more than half the investors interested in Romanian opportunities turn to the power sector, especially wind generation. Investments in the transmission infrastructure are a priority to our Company, in view of the safe connection of renewable energy projects, stated Octavian Lohan, Director General of Transelectrica.
Transelectrica is Romania?s transmission and system operator managing, operating, maintaining, modernising and developing the transmission grid comprising 80 transformer substations of about 35,000 MVA and 9,028 km overhead lines at 110/220 kV, 400 kV and 750 kV managed by 8 transmission branches.
